NIGERIA MANY PROMO’S
BY
OYELEKE TEMITAYO SUNDAY.
The genesis of
Nigeria many promos’ wasn’t something just of recent
but happened to be something that could be traced to the
early 1990’s as the euphoria can be said to be with the
introduction of 22 Daewoo racer saloon cars by the Nigerian
Bottling Company (NBC) the maker’s of seven-up the orthodox
soft mineral drinks that keep million’s of Nigerian’s on
their feet’s for the race of who wanna win one of the
22 Daewoo racer saloon cars presented by the
Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) the maker’s of
seven-up that any individual with a crown-cap that logically
spell out the Daewoo will have to win one of the 22 Daewoo
saloon cars.
Due to the promo
embarked by the NBC the marker’s of seven-up, the company
raked in million’s of returns from the promo air-marked by
the company after many years of neglect of the company’s
product by the consumers who are not that satisfied with the
company’s product. Immediately the
Nigeria Bottling Company (NBC) make reasonable
returns from the promo this opened another windows of
opportunity to other maker’s of beverages and brewery
companies like
Nigeria Breweries Plc (NB) the maker’s of Guilder
Lager Beer, Star Lager Beer, Harp Lager Beer and Maltina to
mention but few and Guinness
Nigeria Plc the marker’s of Guinness Stout, Guinness
Extra Smooth,
Malta Guinness and Gordon Spark.
The brewery companies
kick started their promos’ by printing their consolation
prizes right under the foil covering the crown-cap used in
covering various beer’s produced by the companies, the promo
embarked by the brewery companies keep the consumer’s of
their product eyes glue to their respective crown-cap in
order to known their status of win or otherwise and as a
result of the promo’s embarked by the brewery companies the
brewery companies becomes the most vibrant sector of the
economy immediately after the oil sector placing the banking
sector as the third sector of the economy.
As a result of huge
dividence the brewery companies declared at the end of the
year prompted the brewery companies to organized big
concerts yearly, inviting crème de la crème musician’s in
the musical world to the country to performed in the
presence of timid population of Nigerian’s who are dead-bent
on social life and these has made the country to witnessed
the present of big time musician’s in the country with the
likes of JAY-Z, CIARA, 50 CENTS, LL COOL J, AKON, SNOOP DOGG,
WYCLEF JEAN and SEAN PAUL to mention but few of the
international artistes who has grazed the country performing
alongside their Nigerian counterparts.
But the last but the
least among the
Nigeria many promo’s happened with the introduction
of Global for System and Communication (GSM) into the
country in 2001, when the present administration liberalized
the communication sector from the ill-sicken
Nigeria Telecommunication Company (NITEL) that
monopolized the country communication system.
The introduction of
MTN, GLOBACOM, CELTEL, NITEL now owned by Transcorp and the
just license communication company from the
United Arab Emirate (UAE) Mubadala see Nigerian’s
through another round of promo’s with great disparity from
the incessant promo’s Nigerian’s had been prone to.
The communication
companies flag-off series of promo’s from time to time on
their respective networks and the communication companies
see the likes of private communication outfits like MTECH,
V2NET to own a customized service on their respective
networks which the communication outfits seeking subscribers
of the GSM companies to forward their requests and answers
to their private service lines while certain substantial
amount of money will be deduced from such subscribers credit
at a very exorbitant rate and in order for the communication
companies to chop-up their dividence at the end of the year,
everyone of them embarked on promo’s at the time making the
nation communication altitude unserene because of the many
promo’s the communication companies are rolling-out on a
daily basis making the country to build her own
Las Vegas the home of gambler’s on our respective
phones.
But the most annoying
thing about the many promos needs to do with the genuineness
of these many promos’s advertised both on our print and
electronic media’s. The presence of many promo’s in the
country today than ever before in the
Nigeria history has opened the windows of opportunity
to some unscrupulous fellows called scammers that send
different kinds of Short Message Service (SMS) to people and
in-turn scam some innocent citizen’s by asking them to send
recharge cards of different denominations for them to
redeemed their prizes.
I think all hands need
to be on desk, the government and all relevant agencies
needs to ship-in and stopped this shameful and sinful act
growing under the garments of some Nigerian’s and corporate
organizations.
