June 12, 2007...As Yoruba’s worldwide mark the 14th year anniversary of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by Chief MKO Abíólá, but, cancelled on June 23, 1993, and later annulled by Ibrahim Babangida the country’s military dictator at the time, members of the Egbe Omo Yoruba North America gear up for the final preparations for their 15th Annual Convention which is set to begin in Baltimore, Maryland on August 2, 2007 for three days at the brand new five star Hilton Baltimore BWI Airport Hotel. This year’s convention reiterates the tone set at last years’ Convention in Tampa and favorably supported by the retinue of eminent personalities that have indicated their willingness to be part of this annual gathering of Yoruba leaders in the Diasporas and in Nigeria. Leading the Nigeria group of attendees is His Royal Highness, Káábíyèsí Aláíyélúwà Oba Làmídì Adéyemí III, the Aláàfin of Òyó, all Governors of Yorùbá States including Òtúnba Gbénga Daniel Governor of Ogun State and Omooba (Prince) Olágùnsoyè Oyinlolá, Governor of Òsun State. Others include, Chief Bísí Àkàndé, Chairman of Action Congress and former Governor of Òsun State, Senator Ìyábò Obásanjó-Bello, Senator Adélékè Mámora, Chief (Dr.) Yomi Májèkódùnmí, Chairman Gateway Holdings, Prince Julius Adélùsì, Chairman Managing Director Oodua Investment Corporation, Dr. Ònaolápò Sóléye and Chairman Ògùn State Economic Development Working Group and former Federal Minister of Finance and Cecilia Ibru, Chief Executive of Oceanic Bank. The convention will begin on Friday with a cultural show as well as a beauty and an educational discourse event that would provide children an opportunity to interact and get a feel of the splendor that is always the atmosphere at our conventions. A sleuth of traditional game tournaments is also scheduled for Friday evening. Tagged “Charm City 2007,” the theme for this convention is “The Social and Economic Development of the Yorùbá People in the 21st Century and Beyond.” The convention will feature a town hall meeting, workshops and seminar. The Saturday night Excellence Award Gala, will wrap up the three-day historic convention. Notable Yoruba Sons and Daughters, who are drawn from various spans of professions, will be honored. Most of these awardees are being recognized for their contribution to the growth and development of the Yoruba tradition and culture. The annual convention is a forum for all Yoruba to gather and brainstorm on current event that are relevant to them, and on those issues that threaten to challenge their continual existence as a race. It is also an avenue for the Yoruba leaders to advance a discourse on the way forward especially, since this year’s convention comes at the heels of the 2007 general elections in Nigeria. About 500 delegates from all over North America and a strong delegation from Egbe Omo Yoruba Europe are expected at this year convention in Baltimore “Charm City”, Maryland.
