“I WILL RESIGN IF INDICTED,”- Yar’Adua

By Emmanuel Ogebe/Abuja (360 AFRIKA LIVE)

Abuja, Nigeria - Governor Yar’Adua, presidential candidate of the ruling People’s Democratic Party in elections later this month, has pledged to resign if any corruption is found involving him during his tenure as chief executive of Katsina state.

Responding to a question if he would be more consistent in fighting corruption than the current PDP administration, Governor Yar’Adua declined to concede that there was selectivity in the prosecution of alleged corrupt officials. However when prodded as to whether he would waive his immunity as president to face charges for corruption if any was uncovered from his tenure, the front-runner candidate declared to 360 Afrika Live – A Washington DC based Diaspora-run TV media group – that rather than waive his immunity, he would resign.

The exclusive interview, which was held in Abuja, Nigeria, was prior to an interactive session with foreign media to mark the official end of the PDP presidential campaign this weekend.  Mr. Yar’Adua also explained why he has not made a priority of international outreach to the Nigerian Diaspora or the global community especially since he is largely unknown. In addition he explained why no hospitals in his state could attend to his medical needs necessitating his travel abroad for attention.

In the brief television interview, the presidential hopeful also spoke about Amina Lawal; the single mother formerly sentenced to death for adultery in Katsina state, and admitted that she was now an internationally famous person who may have a role to play during his administration if he is elected. He told Emmanuel Ogebe – host of 360 Africa’s presidential elections interviews series - that during his visit to Germany for medical treatment, he saw photographs of Amina in the local papers.

The interview will be broadcast in the US Easter Saturday and Sunday on Comcast in the Washington DC area (check local listings on RCN and Galaxy in other states.)
