BEING THE COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE ONE-DAY WORKSHOP ON YOUTHS
EMPOWERMENT FOR YOUTHS IN IJEBU EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT
The Oladunjoye Resource Centre, a non-governmental, non-political, and
not-for-profit organization situated at Ijebu-Itele, in Ijebu East Local
Government of Ogun State organized a one-day empowerment workshop for youths in
Ijebu East Local Government on Thursday, March 31, 2005 at the Town Hall,
Ijebu-Itele.
THEME: Youths Empowerment for Nation Building.
PARTICIPANTS
Participants numbering about 40 were drawn for youth’s associations cutting
across social, cultural and political strata within the local government.
PRESENTATIONS
Three papers were presented:
1. Agenda for Youths in Nation Building, by Mr. Dominic Ogampa, Head Resource
Centre, Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC), Ijebu Ode.
2. Challenges Facing the Youths Under Political and Economic Reforms, by Mr.
Bola Odumosu, Executive Secretary, Youth Action Initiative, Ijebu-Ode.
3. Nigerian Youths and Human Rights, by Gbenga Azeez, Human Rights Extension
Unit, JDPC, Ijebu-Ode.
OBSERVATIONS
After exhaustive discussions of papers presented, questions and answers and
contributions by participants, the followings were observed:
1. That during the initiation of the State Economic Empowerment and Development
Strategies (SEED), the youths of the state were not consulted or adequately
informed.
2. That there are too few youths development centres in the 20 local government
councils of the state.
3. That the 1983 National Youth Policy of earmarking 3 % of (Federal, State and
local government) budget for youth development has not been implemented.
4. That there is no strong network among youth organizations in Ogun State.
5. That there are not enough vocational centres for youths to develop vocational
and artistic skills.
6. That the youths still face the problem of limited resources for funding
youths programmes and activities.
7. That there are inequalities in socio-economic and political positions.
RECOMMEN DATIONS
As a result of the foregoing, the participants recommend that:
1. People should be properly educated that participation in democracy is a
justciable right and not a privilege.
2. More youths development centres be established in all the local government
areas of Ogun State.
3. Government should duely observe and implement the 1983 National Youth Policy
provision of spending at least 3% of budget on youths development.
4. The government should create an enabling environment for youths to network
for cross-fertilization of ideas.
5. The youths should be considered when allocating positions (especially
elective offices) in government).
CONCLUSION
Participants and resource persons unanimously commend the organizers, Oladunjoye
Resource Centre for putting together the highly educative workshop and called on
other stakeholders to follow suit.
